In The Heat Of The Night
June 8, Riverhead, NY--- A very warm, humid day and evening greeted
us this week for racing. Summer racing has arrived. Practice time was a
prelude to the evenings continuance of woes. Hot cars, drivers, crews
and after a while tempers showed themselves today.
The #6 of Steve Stadler never made it to race time. His engine problems were too serious to fix after his practice runs. The evenings races started off with the #3 of Ralph Tasso and #27 of Scott Pedersen on the front row. From the drop of the flag it was a night of smashing, banging, spin outs and being dumped. There were so many bumps, dumps and spins, that trying to keep track of them all was impossible. Roger Maynor made the most incredible move of the night when the field bumped, banged and spun across the entire racing lane, from a cloud of smoke he emerged unscathed, picking up many positions. He raced like the champion he is, maneuvering around the track and being able to stay out of harms way. No one else seemed to be so lucky. It appeared that almost every car on the track either spun or was spun by someone. Although no cautions were thrown till the last lap, the melee was bringing cars and drivers at times perilously close to serious hits and collisions. Tom Kraft, Paul Specht, Scott Pedersen, Mike Mujsce and Arne Pedersen all had mechanical problems with their cars. The remaining cars who raced tonight all have a long week of cosmetic repairs to be done. No one appeared to come out unscathed. Kudos to Roger Maynor again for coming through the pack and a very deserving win. Unofficial Order Of Finish 1)
