May 24 Race Report
By Karen Specht

May 30, Riverhead, NY--- A beautiful day greeted us on Saturday, May 17th.  Warm, sunny with a light breeze... and most importantly dry!

There was a better than normal turnout for the division tonight.  Cars have returned that had been gone since last season with new paint schemes and sponsors.  It was nice to see Steve Stadler and Will Farrell on the track again.

Our race was last on the schedule again. Rain was approaching and threatening.  The race started with the "0X" and "00", team-mates on the front row. It was Tom Ferrara in the lead from the drop of the green flag through the checker. Many drivers challenged each other throughout the race for positions that were often changing. Through various banging, beating and on-track skirmishes the race was run.  It seemed that most cars had some type of damage at the end. A few cars retired early with what appeared to be over-heating problems, steam or smoke spewing from the engine area. Some cars starting up front were able to hold on to those positions but not better their positions; just maintain.

Roger Maynor made the most position changes coming from the rear of the field to challenge repeatedly for the lead to no avail. It was Tom Ferrara's night to win, justly earned and well deserved.  Congratulations Tom.

**ON A SIDE NOTE**  During the day Saturday, a meeting was held of the figure eight drivers.  Tires was the topic being discussed; who wanted this current tire to stay and who wanted something different. I was not at the meeting. From a few drivers I spoke to it seems that there was a split decision although many didn't vocalize their feelings.  From my observation and the finishing orders of the few races run, it appears that this tire may have leveled the field out.  There have been 3 races with 3 different winners, different cars finishing in different orders on a nightly basis. It doesn't appear observing from the sidelines that many cars are having problems with traction, or excessively spinning/sliding of tires. Every driver has their own style of driving and of course this needs to be taken into account.  Regardless, the track officials have decided the tire we are on is the tire we are staying on. Tire issue closed!

The division is off for Memorial Day weekend racing... so to all out there have a safe week and holiday.
