DON HOWE... "It's An Honor"
by S.A.F.E.R. Staff
When you think about Figure 8 racing throughout the 60's and 70's, you think of Islip Speedway. Well, think some more! Riverhead Raceway also had Figure 8 racing. Name like Dan Jivanelli, Dave Hawkes, Chris Young, Danny Turbush, Greg Sacks, and Don Howe. Not a bad bunch of drivers, huh?
The SAFER Hall of Fame is also filled with a good bunch of driver and officials. Joining the Hall this year will be 4-time Modified Champ Don Howe.
Don had 6 feature wins in the Figure 8 division, taking down his first win on June 20, 1970, over 28 years ago. Don moved into modifieds in the early 70's. When he was done, he was 5th on the all-time win list with 37, and no driver had more winning seasons that Don's #14.
When Don's name came up as a candidate, many people wondered why a 4-time champ would want to be in the SAFER Hall of Fame. The debate went back and forth. Some people actually laughed at the thought. Others said he would decline.
So, at the 50th Anniversary Celebration at Riverhead Raceway, Don was approached. He was asked what he thought of SAFER, and what it would mean to him to be in the SAFER Hall of Fame someday. Don was aware of SAFER, and his eyes lit up, while that little boy grin grew across his face.
He quickly said, "I would be honored! I started in Figure 8's and I have the utmost respect for Figure 8 drivers."
Well Don, SAFER has the utmost respect for you, and is honored to have you in the hall. A champion and a gentleman.
