"Where it all began..."
Bob Lee Enters Hall of Fame
By Joe Larsen
Senior NASCAR Official Bob Lee has been chosen by the
S.A.F.E.R Board to enter the Ernie Maynor Memorial Hall of Fame. A veteran
starter with a wealth of knowledge and a true love for the sport of auto racing,
Lee is so deserving of this special honor.
Bob Lee started his first race somewhere "in the boonies" in 1957 as a 17 year
old kid. With tattered flags in hand, who was to know that this would last close
to 50 years. In that time span Lee has started go kart races, 3/4 Midget races,
Jalopy races, Sprint cars and of course Figure Eights and Modifieds.
Lee has flagged races all over the East Coast. He has started races at New
Egypt, Atlantic City, the Atlantic City Convention Center, Stafford, Catamount,
Albany, Saratoga, Freeport, Islip and Riverhead. Lee also started the Race of
Champions races, which were held annually up to a few years ago. You may
remember his red, white and blue sequined Leisure Suit that he wore to so many
of the races he started.
One of Lee's most little known achievements is the fact that he laid out the
original Figure8 course at Riverhead Raceway with nothing more than a ruler and
some string. Lee carried a business card which read, "Have flags will travel."
Well Bob, your travels have taken you the the S.A.F.E.R Hall of Fame and you are
in good company. The World's Famous Figure 8 Stock Cars are proud to have you
aboard.
