AL WORTH JOINS S.A.F.E.R. HALL OF FAME
by Joe Larsen
The Suffolk Association of Figure Eight Racing has added Al Worth to its prestigious Ernie Maynor Memorial Hall of Fame.
When you talk about Figure Eight mainstays, Al Worth is right up there with the best. Although he never won a championship, Worth was there week after week, battling for a win. His "moon eyes" #00 was a favorite of the fans.
ABC-TV's Wide World of Sports often followed his car with the camera when the World Championship was televised from Islip Speedway.
Al was dedicated to the sport and was always willing to help a fellow driver. He was a colorful competitor who often had the other drivers hysterical laughing over some antic he pulled.
A veteran of close to 20 years on Long Island's short tracks, Al ended his career in the mid 1980's after moving into the Modified ranks.
Worth still lives on Long Island and is also a proud inductee into the Hall of Fame.
